Haemofiltration

Haemofiltration:

  • This involves removal of plasma water and its dissolved constituents (e.g. K+, Na+, urea and PO43-) by convective flow across a high-flux semi-permeable membrane, and replacing it with a solution of the desired biochemical composition
  • Can be used for both acute and chronic renal failure
  • High volumes need to be exchanged in order to achieve adequate small molecule removal:
    • CRF - 22L exchange 3 times a week
    • ARF – 1L per hour
  • Expensive and not often used in patients with ESRF
  • May be cost-effective in treating ARF
