Cor pulmonale


Cor pulmonale is right-heart failure caused by chronic pulmonary hypertension induced by chronic hypoxia secondary to diseases of the lung, its vessels, or the thoracic cage.


Causes of cor pulmonale:

Pulmonary vascular disorders:

  • PE
  • Pulmonary hypertension

Disease of the lung and parenchyma:

  • COPD

Musculoskeletal disorders:

  • Poliomyelitis
  • Myasthenia gravis

Disturbance of respiratory control:

  • Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Cerebrovascular disease

Left-heart disorders:

  • Mitral stenosis
  • LVF
